Hilltop House is a Bavarian Style house that was originally built in the 1950's as a home and art studio for a couple from Germany. He was an artist and she was a photographer and the house reminded them of home. It is built on the side of a mountain with beautiful views over the Klein Windhoek Valley and mountains in the distance. The house is surrounded by a tranquil garden and has a pool with a deck overlooking the Valley.
In 2000 it was transformed into a beautiful, small, friendly guesthouse and is run by Allen and Angela.
The atmosphere is calm and relaxing. Come in, kick your shoes off, put your feet up and relax.
There are 7 rooms in total. 5 double or twin rooms and 2 single rooms.
Hilltop House is situated in the City Central area of Windhoek, Namibia and is a 20 minute walk or 5 minute drive from the main business and shopping areas. The NamPower convention centre is just around the corner, 5 minutes walk away. The guesthouse is also situated just off the intersection of Nelson Mandela and Robert Mugabe Avenue which is the main road through Windhoek from North to South making the Northern Industrial Area in the North and Maerua Mall and the Southern Suburbs and road to the South easily accessible as well as both airports. Surprisingly, for being so central, we are on a very quiet and peaceful cul de sac
We are trying to make everything as environmentally friendly as possible so all light bulbs have been replaced with energy savers and the fresh herbs and some of the cherry tomatoes we use in the kitchen are organically grown in the garden, fertilized with compost made by earthworms from organic kitchen waste in the worm farm. All rooms have showers to save water. A future project is to install solar geysers. We have also cut our paper use by 99% and all info and bookings are stored electronically.
We encourage local birds to the garden and have some regular blue waxbills, masked weavers, scarlet chested sunbirds and the endemic, Damara Rock Runner. Black throated canaries have been nesting in the Bridal tree and mousebirds in the bouganvilla. Little swifts nest every year in the eaves and Bradfield's swifts in the small crack between the roof and wall. This does entail constant cleaning up during the breeding season but we love having them around so it is worth it.
We also have rock hyraxes below the pool and yellow mongooses which come right up into the garden and sometimes look into the rooms as the trot past.
We can also arrange for a local cell phone starter pack to be waiting for you when you arrive and let you know the number you will have before you have left home so you can leave it with family and friends.
Transfers both to and from both Hosea Kutako International Airport and Eros Airport can also be arranged, as can the use of a reliable taxi for the duration of your stay
